KYPROS TOKAS

He was born in Limassol in 1924. He father came from the village of Lofou and his mother from Agios Georgios Sylikou. He graduated from the Second Urban School of Limassol and went on to work. He took evening lessons by teachers who were friends of his family. He did several jobs including that of a cabinet maker, barber, greengrocer etc. In 1961 he became a reported for “Haravgi” and Eleftheria” newspapers, where he worked until 1988.

He dealt with literature and poetry since his childhood years. Several of his texts have been published in newspapers and magazines. He wrote several lines for carnival songs, among them being the well-known “Mes ti Lemeso mas kai pali”.

His poems have been turned into songs by his son, the well-known musician and composer Marios Tokas. He has published 11 poem collections. He started painting at the age of 50 and he has displayed his work in nine personal exhibitions, whereas he has also participated in several group exhibitions.

He is a member of the Union of Cyprus Journalists, the Children’s – Youth Book Association, the Writers’ Union and the Self-taught Painters Association.
